Why AFM Safecoat?

Choosing non-toxic paint and finish products are essential to creating healthy interior spaces.

Just like the quality of the food we eat and the beauty products we use are paramount to our overall health and wellbeing, Indoor Air Quality is an area that should be considered in our individual health care pursuits, as well.

What you may not be aware of is that the surfaces in your home can contribute to your symptoms of poor health, allergies, mood swings, and general fatigue.  It’s possible that toxic chemicals from the paints, polyurethane finishes, and glues used in the construction of your space are off-gassing toxic chemicals that dramatically reduce the quality of the air you breathe everyday.

As a Holistic Interior Designer, Healthy Building Consultant, and someone who personally suffers from multiple chemical sensitivities, I have spent YEARS trying various brands of paint and finish products that would:

  1. IMPROVE the indoor air quality of my home by NOT off-gassing toxic chemicals for months/years to come. (aka–saving me from migraine headaches, flu-like body aches, and continuous sinus infections.)
  2. Be DURABLE enough to handle life with two kids, two dogs, and a husband who loves to play catch indoors with said creatures! (aka–I need to be able to wash my walls without smearing chalky substances around!)

How AFM Safecoat differs from other “environmentally friendly” paints:

In the past I’ve tried the following consumer paint products available at most big box stores:

  • Valspar Ultra Premium Interior low odor, low VOC Clean Air Formula
  • Olympic Premium Interior zero VOC, environmentally preferred paint
  • Sherwin Williams Harmony Interior Acrylic Latex paint

Unfortunately what they all have in common is they still produced an odor that lasted for months, gave me headaches, body aches, and sinus irritation! I later learned upon further research that the colorants added to the base paint often contain unhealthy levels of VOC’s, thereby defeating the purpose of a low to no VOC base!!

AND these paints were not durable whatsoever! (Durability being of paramount importance when you have an active and lively family or even a commercial, high-traffic space!)

**Health benefits aside, durability alone has led me to embrace the knowledge that a higher priced paint of exceptional quality is worth the investment if it means I don’t have to repaint so often. Add to that the peace of mind that I’m creating a healthier home for my family in the process and its a win win investment.

What exactly are VOC’s?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

“Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as copiers and printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions.”

To learn more about the various sources of VOC’s and how they adversely affect your health, a good place to start would be to read the EPA’s Introduction to Indoor Air Quality.

I stopped searching for the best paint and finish products once I discovered AFM Safecoat.

Aside from the brands I’ve tried, there are several others on the market that claim they are low to no VOC paints that promote healthier indoor air quality, as well.

However, they do not compare to the quality, consumer tested results, or scientific and medical backing of AFM Safecoat products.

What I LOVE about this company is that they use scientific data in combination with Chemically Sensitive Doctor and Patient Approval for all of their product formulas.

This means there is a deeper level of trust in knowing you are using a product that is healthier for yourself, your home, and your children.
